Modelling the suction-dependent plastic shakedown limit of unsaturated fine/coarse soil mixture with consideration of soil-water retention curve

چکیده
An interlayer soil was identified in the French conventional rail tracks, corresponding to a mixture of subgrade fine and ballast grains. Experimental results show that permanent strain such fine/coarse can be at stable or unstable state, depending on stress level with respect plastic shakedown limit σ dth (the maximum for strain). As water content changed, matric suction ψ changed subsequently, leading change . In this study, model incorporating soil–water retention curve proposed describe variation varying coarse grain f v This implied under saturated state dth-sat , reference dth-ref ref parameters related curve. The validated using three series studies literature. Based an existing approach implying representative rate 1/ s values determined these series. For each series, obtained divided into two groups: first group used determine parameter B relationship between while second adopted validate previous A reasonably good agreement measurements calculations studies. comparison made, showing performance describing variations

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils
In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...
متن کاملRetention of Water by Soil on a Suction
The tension phenomenon described herein occurs in a wide variety of porous materials, including sands, clays, agricultural soils and porous rocks. When some of the water is removed from a water-saturated porous system, the residual water evidently remains physically interconnected, judging from the fact that water can be transmitted through the system at reduced water content by suction. The re...
متن کاملAn evolutionary approach to modelling the soil-water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils
In this paper a new approach is presented based on evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) for modelling of soil–water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils. EPR is an evolutionary data mining technique that generates a transparent and structured representation of the behaviour of a system directly from data. This method can operate on large quantities of data in order to capture nonlinear...
متن کاملLimit Equilibrium Analysis of the Influence of Matric Suction on Unsaturated Soil Slope Stability
In slope engineering, soils are commonly at unsaturated state. The question of how to apply unsaturated soil mechanics theory to the slope stability analysis has become a hot spot in today’s geotechnical engineering research. Based on the experimental research of how shear strength of residual soil varies with water content, reasonable computation modules can be created. By using limit equilibr...
متن کاملChemical migration during soil water retention curve evaluation.
Wetting and drying (W-D) cycles can induce important elemental migrations in soils. The main purpose of this work was to study the possible existence of soil chemical elemental migrations in samples submitted to repeated W-D cycles during evaluations of soil water retention curve (SWRC). The experimental measurements were carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) for Ca(2+), Mg(2+) an...
